Really Bad LinkedIn Sales Advice
Why You Should NEVER Follow Sales Advice On LinkedIn
So I was on this LinkedIn forum this week and a guy asked what is the #1 piece of advice you’d give a new salesperson. As you might imagine, the answers were laughable.
Here are a few of the actual posts: (Seriously)
- Once your in it you will never get out of it.
- You will fail 90% of the time.
- Winners don’t lose, they take hits.
- Learn to love the word “No.” and persevere.
- Get talking to as many people as possible.
- Expect the unexpected everyday.
- Keep calling, and calling, and calling.
- Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Who wants to do all these things???
These people have to be pounding Zoloft. Like handfuls at a time.
I think you’ll agree it’s obvious they all missed the boat. Why? Because these are all externalities.
You don't become successful by blindly following what other people say. And it definitely doesn't happen by choosing the passive (and BETA) path.
When you do that, you take away your ability to direct your life and design your future.
Plus, people lose respect for people who do this. And when they lose respect for you, they immediately start thinking of objections to throw your way.
On the other hand, everything you need to be successful is within you right now.
It turns out the real control variable is something most people (including sometimes me and you) don’t want to talk about.
It's the person in the mirror. It's us.
The reason that all that garbage advice I saw on LinkedIn doesn't work is because we hate when people are like that to us!
If you had someone walk up to you and ask if that would help them sell something to you, do you really think you'd tell them yes????
No way. Not a shot.
If you're going to change your results wholesale, you have to change what you do wholesale. Make sense? Sorta. Let me explain.
If your goal is to sell something to someone, that person will pick up on it and immediately go into resistance mode -- just as you or I would.
